Then Pickle emerged near the top of the tree and lost her balance. She fell through the air and landed perfectly on her feet, with a wide-eyed look of embarrassment. All around, the humans gasped. Someone rushed to clean up the mess, while others stood around looking annoyed or upset, and a few just seemed impressed that Pickle had landed so gracefully on her feet. King was pretty sure he’d seen someone taking a picture.

“Pickle! That was you?” Pickle’s owner ran out toward the tree and picked Pickle up. “I don’t know what got into you. You are in a lot of trouble.”

Pickle gave the dogs a look that King took to mean, You’ve ruined my reputation, as her owner apologized to the gathered crowd of humans.

“Oh no,” King said to Hugo and Waffles. “We got Pickle in trouble. And for what? The star is totally broken! We can’t give it to Cleo now.”

“Look,” Waffles said. “Part of the star is still in one piece. It may not be a whole star, but it’s still really shiny and pretty.”

Waffles was right. Half the star was sitting in the fake snow under the tree. The rest of it was broken beyond recognition, but maybe Cleo would like half a star? It was better than nothing.

King, Hugo, and Waffles approached the wreckage of the tree and each bit onto a different corner of the star fragment. Then they dragged it back to the Pet City tent, where Cleo was still sitting with Lulu.

“Did you guys see what happened to the tree?” Cleo asked, concerned. Then she noticed the star in their mouths. “Wait . . . Did you . . . ?”

“I goth you thith shthar!” King mumbled, with a corner of the star still in his mouth.

Cleo looked absolutely shocked and horrified. She stood up and turned her head away from King. “That’s terrible! The Christmas tree is destroyed! The whole thing almost fell over!” she said. “I can’t believe you had anything to do with that, King. I’m so disappointed in you. In all of you.”

King laid the star fragment in front of Cleo, hoping she would see it and understand.

“I’m sorry,” King whined. “I just did it because—”

“Because you felt sorry for me?” Cleo snapped, swiping away the star fragment with her paw. “Well, don’t! I don’t need your pity! I want to be alone!” Then she stormed off and sat underneath a tree.

“Hey, you did your best,” Hugo told King. “It’s the thought that counts.”

“Yeah,” Waffles added. “It’s not your fault!”

“Thanks,” King whined. “But if it’s okay, I think I want to be alone right now too.”

Hugo and Waffles nodded and gave him some space. King felt an uncontrollable urge to curl up into a ball and make himself as small as possible. So that’s what he did.
